High replay value. Speedrunning potential is excellent.The developer clearly has a lot of love for this project. It has a similar feel to Touhou games, in ways both good and bad. Melee influence is limited to memes, references, and the ability to shine and dash around really fast.It's fast-paced and controls are tight. In spite of framerate limited to 30fps, movement and shooting feels fluid. Boss fights are tense, with interesting bullet patterns. The flexible utility of "shine" and the special attack for movement, offense, and defense means that in any situation the player has many options - learning how to optimally act is very rewarding.The tutorial does a great job and blends in as the first level. However, I wish there was somewhere to view all the control options, or perhaps even rebind them. It's not obvious what alternative control schemes exist, and the default controller bindings I just could not handle - pumping the trigger on an Xbox controller for every timed shot is exhausting.Some aspects lack polish. One is collision with ladders and some kinds of walls; there's a chance of getting briefly stuck on deceptively large hitboxes when trying to move past some obstacles.Quality of the visuals varies, but generally works well. Graphics for key characters are nicely expressive, and the less refined ones are fitting with the 4-color palatte and cheeseball style of the writing. Music is great. The default audio balance seems off - especially noticeable since shooting in sync with the music is a key mechanic - but audio sliders in the settings mean this is easily fixed.Overall, game is good and super worth it. Short (though absolutely fair for $1), replayable, not overly difficult, fun to master. Never waveshined so much before in my life.I'd buy a pricier game with similar mechanics and a bit more polish in a heartbeat.. This game is actually really fun for how cheap it is, please. TL;DR: This game is an amazing experience, especially for $0.99. I highly recommend playing it again and again and again.I discovered this game through YouTube videos of the soundtrack when I was trying to find inspiration for compositions. I thought the game was pretty neat, and decided to spend $0.99 on it. What really interested me was how "speedrunnable" the game seemed. Let's get into the core gameplay first. You run around in a top-down RPG-like environment while shooting enemies with bullets. Soon after starting, the game tells you that you can absorb enemy bullets to use as your own. This seems like a weird mechanic, but I can absolutely assure you that you will be needing this on more than one occassion. My first playthrough was extremely challenging to complete. I died countless times in boss fights, and even in the stages themselves. Note to self: Trying to speedrun the game on your first playthrough is a VERY bad idea.Next up, the soundtrack. It's really amazing. The dev definitely picked the right composers for this. I often find myself humming the soundtrack because of how catchy it is, lol.I was already going to buy the game, but what actually got me to spend so much time with it? The dev mentioned that he was going to post his time once the speedrun.com leaderboard was approved, and I was instantly hooked into speedrunning this. Despite how the game looks, every bit of the speedrun is extremely technical. You have to make sure that you are moving fast while not bonking into walls or bullets during the stages, while executing boss strats during bosses. Getting that first deathless run is a challenge, but then you find that you still have a LOT more time to shave off. I can shave off at least 6 seconds for my Stage 1 time alone (dev has 0:28, I have 0:34).Huge props to the dev for making such an amazing game. This is the second game that I've seriously picked up for speedrunning purposes. I'm still not done with it, lol. If you've read this far, seriously consider picking this up as a speedgame. Whether you're completely new to speedrunning or a speedrunning veteran, you will enjoy the game like no other.. Cool uncle + Anime girl + Touhou + Super smash bros melee + memes = this gameOverall: 10/10. If you are bad at video games, this is a perfect game for you! The fact that the beat of the OST ties into the gameplay was a really interesting concept to me, and I think it was pulled off well. The absorb and reflect feature was a welcome addition to the standard bullet hell concept. The gameplay really shines especially in the multiple boss fights throughout the game. You have to make use of the game's mechanics to find out ways to take out your enemy efficiently and take the least amount of damage.The level design was nothing too inspiring as it was a normal "kill enemies, go here, fight boss" sort of deal. It almost felt like the points in between boss fights were kind of useless, however the fun gameplay does make up for it.The plot of the game isn't difficult to wrap your head around. It is a generic save the world story.Now where the game really shines for me is the characters, and more specifically their interactions. The dialogue between everyone was always interesting and a pleasure to see. The comedic moments aren't something that should be overlooked in this game. It was also able to pull off serious moments aswell, which was nice. The character designs we're pretty alright for what they were and served their purpose.My main complaint of the game is that it's too short and there's basically no character progression/level ups. However, I think the shortness of the game can help towards potential speedruns (and achievements).Overall I had a pretty good time playing this game for the low price of under a dollar.
